Im 6. Jh. Herzogshof war Dingolfing im 8. und 10. Jh. Tagungsort der "Landessynoden" (Landtage). 1251 erhielt Dingolfing Stadtrecht.

Die Stadt im Isartal ist das Tor zum Vilstal. Sehenswert sind das Herzoghaus, der gotische Backsteinbau der Pfarrkirche St. Johannes und Teile der Stadtbefestigung.

Das BMW-Zweigwerk brachte Großindustrie in die Stadt.
